What causes frizzy hair?
Frizzy hair happens when the level of humidity in the air is greater than the level of water in your hair. When the hair shaft becomes dry, the cuticle scales can swell and stick out, making it look puffy. The most common cause of this dryness is over-washing or using harsh shampoos that strip away natural oils and drying hair with abrasive towels, leaving hair brittle and prone to breakage. Other possible triggers include heat-styling without a heat protectant and using the wrong type of brush or comb.
To help keep frizz at bay, treat your hair to shampoos like our Smooth+ Shampoo that will nourish your hair, avoid harsh brushes such as boar bristle brushes, allow your hair to air-dry whenever possible, and use a heat protectant like our Defrizz+ Oil Treatment on a regular basis. Additionally, it may be helpful to invest in high-quality heat-styling tools with adjustable temperature settings that won't damage your hair as you style it.
Why does curly hair get frizzy?
Curly hair is more prone to frizz than other hair types because its spiraled shape prevents moisture and natural oils from easily traveling down the shaft from your roots. As a result, the cuticles are deprived of vital hydration and can become dry and brittle, leading to frizz.
When other frizz-inducing factors, such as using harsh shampoos and heat tools, are added to the mix, these natural properties of curly hair can be amplified. Our Smooth+ Regimen helps improve scalp health while replenishing + repairing dry, damaged strands for softer, shinier, frizz-free hair instantly and over time.
Washing the hair too frequently is also a common culprit — because oil travels down the shaft more slowly in curly hair, this hair type doesn't need to be washed as frequently as other hair types. If your curls are overly frizzy, you may want to consider cutting down on washings and using a lightweight dry shampoo like our Refresh+ Dry Shampoo for refreshed hair between washes or including a nourishing oil treatment into your hair routine, like our Defrizz+ Oil Treatment.
What causes hair to be dry?
Hair becomes dry when it doesn't contain enough oil or moisture. As a result, it may appear dull, brittle, or frizzy. Many factors can contribute to this issue, such as hard water, dry air, poor nutrition and aging. Other common culprits include:
• Excessive heat-styling with curling irons, flat irons, and blow dryers
• Using shampoos or conditioners containing harsh ingredients, such as sulfates
• Washing your hair too frequently
• Too much exposure to sunlight, saltwater, or chlorine
It's often a combination of two or more of these factors that can result in dryness. The reason for your hair being dry will depend on your unique situation.
What makes hair shiny?
The key to shiny hair is healthy hair. Shiny hair is a sign of strong and smooth cuticles that reflect light and contain adequate levels of natural oils, so the first step in achieving shinier tresses is taking good care of your strands. This may involve eliminating the habits that lead to lackluster hair, such as over-washing, using harsh shampoos with oil-stripping sulfates, and heat styling without a protectant.
There are also a few products that you can use to make your hair look shinier. For example, the Rodan + Fields Smooth+ Regimen contains nourishing ingredients, such as amino acids, silk peptides, and hyaluronic acid, all of which help maintain healthy-looking cuticles and promote shine. Additionally, if your hair is lacking moisture, a deep conditioner or our Defrizz+ Oil Treatment can help replenish hydration and make it look shinier and healthier.
